Gateway Homes, Inc. employs over 60 staff to provide residential and community supports to our homeowners with an intellectual or developmental disability on a 24 hour/7day week basis.

There are 24 full-time support staff, 33 part-time support staff and numerous casual support staff. Support staff are supported by 5 supervisors and a central office which provides management, human resource support, accounting, and payroll services. Gateway is a unionized workplace.

The majority of Gateway employees are initially employed as a casual support staff. Casual support staff are welcome to apply for permanent full and part-time positions as they become available.

Gateway is committed to hiring people who are properly qualified and who share in the organization’s philosophy, values and principles. Personnel recruitment is ongoing with an average of 2-4 new employees being hired each month.

An applicant should have a genuine interest in supporting individuals with intellectual or developmental disability, both at home and in the community, at work, in leisure and social activities. Applicants must be able to work independently and as part of a team, and demonstrate strong organizational skills.

At a minimum employees are required to have a Grade 12 education and some post-secondary education in the Human Services field or have previous experience in a group home or small option setting. A number of employees with Gateway have attained or are currently working towards a university degree or community college diploma.

There is currently programs for  Residential and Vocational services being offered at several Nova Scotia Community College campuses. The training acquired through this program offers prospective employees consistent and relevant knowledge and skill pertinent to our field. The Department of Community Services (DCS) Standards state that this program, or its equivalent, will eventually become the minimum hiring standard for our employees.

Pending the full implementation of this standard, DCS requires that employees must complete seven core competencies before being eligible for the pay rates cited below.

The core competencies are:


  • 1. Fire and Life Safety
  • 2. Health and Personal Care
  • 3. Medication Awareness
  • 4. Individualized Planning
  • 5. Crisis Intervention
  • 6. Behavioural Supports
  • 7. Standard First Aid/CPR


Individuals who do not possess these competencies at the time of hiring will be required to complete training sessions within their initial 12 month probationary period. Gateway will provide paid training in all of the competencies listed above..

In addition to educational requirements, experience and personal attributes, prospective employees need to be flexible and able to work some evenings, overnights, weekends, holidays and relief work.

As of September 1, 2017, wages for casual support staff begin at $14.00 and increases to $15 per hour (with completion of core competencies) plus vacation pay. An overnight sleep shift is paid a flat rate of $84.60
